Yep, your description is exactly right. Due to empty space in the joint the bubble forms, and cracking the knuckle simply disperses it once more.
couldnt have said it better. Its not a good idea to crack your knuckles though

there's some truth to that, but it's mainly just moving the joint out of place causing it to rub against the other bone and causing what we here, a crack or pop. if you do this to much, you will eventually cause arthritic and/or joint problems.

You are also setting yourself up for joint damage and will be paid back when you get older and arthritis sets in.

howstuffworks couldnt say it any better

It's nitrogen bubbles releasing. That's it !

craking or popping your knuckles does not give you arthritis.
Every joint in your body gets these bubbles and you have to relese them. Some peoples knees pop, other peoples elbows.
And the same goes with your back and neck.
Its a natrual part of the human body....and does not give you arthritis.

there is some truth in this yes, there is a gas between the bones, Cartilage and other material in the joints. By pulling the joints apart the gas is released causing a POP. There are arguments to say that it causes arthritis and other problems later in life. However, other say there is no detrimental effect on the joints.
it's not actually a crack but rather, a pop of synovial fluid, and its also a myth that cracking joints causes arthrithis, it doesnt, but doing it over a long period of time excessively will cause you to have a weaker grip
Gas is released
